FAQ

What is Shared Plates?
Shared Plates is a city-wide weekend of dinner parties to celebrate the power of food. Shared Plates dinners are hosted by a glorious cross-section of Angelenos in homes, backyards, businesses, and communities October 5-7, 2018. Everyone can host a Shared Plates dinner (at any ticket price), and every dollar raised supports L.A. Kitchen in the fight against hunger, food waste, and unemployment.

When is Shared Plates?
Shared Plates is the weekend of October 5-7, 2018.

What is L.A. Kitchen?
All food has power. All people have potential. L.A. Kitchen reveals both by providing culinary job training for men and women home from prison while transforming cosmetically imperfect produce into healthy, scratch-made meals for Angelenos who struggle with hunger.

I'm interested in hosting a dinner. What's expected?
Individuals - As an individual host, you'll open your home (or co-host at a friend's home) and invite guests to share a meal together. As the host, you'll cover the food costs and 100% of guests' tickets will support L.A. Kitchen. When you sign-up, you'll be able to choose the date/time of your event  and set your own ticket price. The recommended ticket price is $100 per person, but tickets can range from $5 to $150. We'll provide you with a unique RSVP ticket link to share with your guests as well as a Host Kit that includes Shared Plates table settings, recipe ideas, and host tips.

Groups & Businesses - Community groups, school/college groups, religious groups, and businesses can host a Shared Plates party in a private home, cafeteria, or a community space. You can rally your members to bring a special dish, invite a chef/restaurant to donate dishes, or purchase prepared food. Your group covers the food costs and 100% of guests' tickets will support L.A.

Restaurants - There are lots of ways restaurants can participate in Shared Plates. You can host a special Shared Plates event, donate a % of all sales from the weekend, or offer a set menu in which 100% of proceeds go towards L.A. Kitchen. Whatever works for you! When you sign-up, you'll be able to choose the date/time of your event, set your own ticket price and let us know what you have in mind. If it makes sense for your event, we can set up a unique RSVP ticket link to share with your guests and give you access to the guest list. We'll have Shared Plates table settings and swag for you to decorate your establishment with. Get in touch for more info!

Is a home-cooked meal required to host a Shared Plates dinner?
It's totally up to you! You can cook your own food, host a potluck, have a picnic, order takeout, hire a caterer, or do happy hour at a bar - whatever floats your boat.

Can I host a meal other than dinner?
Brunch is the new dinner anyways! A Shared Plates party is on your own terms. Choose a time that makes sense for you and your guests. When you sign-up, please just tell us what time or type of event you're thinking of.

Can I host on a date other than October 5-7?
Sure! If the Shared Plates weekend doesn't work for you, you can host your event anytime from September 14th - December 31st, 2018. When you sign-up, please let us know what alternative date works best for you.

Can I host in a city other than Los Angeles?
Yes! We'd love for you to bring Shared Plates to your home city. When you sign-up, please let us know where your dinner will take place and we'll try our best to get you a Host Kit with all of the Shared Plates goodies and swag.

I can't host or attend as a guest. How can I still support?
If you're unable to host your own Shared Plates party, and don't have a party to attend, you can buy tickets to one of our many public dinners! Public dinners are a great way for Shared Plates newbies to get involved and meet other Angelenos with similar interests! If you are not available or interested in attending one of these public parties, you can still support L.A. Kitchen by making a donation on our website!

I've signed up to host an event... Now what?
Stay tuned! In less than a week, you will receive an email from Catherine at events@lakitchen.org with your #SharedPlatesLA event link, which you'll share with guests so they can buy tickets to your party. This will be followed by another email from Eventbrite prompting you to setup your subuser account, which you'll use to view all donations and ticket orders for your party.

I need to send out invites to guests today. Can you help me with some language?
Sure, here’s a sample email to get you started: I’m hosting a special dinner party on [event date] as part of Shared Plates, an epic city-wide weekend of dinner parties to celebrate the power of food in Los Angeles. I’d love for you to be my guest! 100% of your ticket goes to support L.A. Kitchen in the fight against hunger, food waste, and unemployment.
